Mum's battle with breast cancer

2011 March - 2012 November

Mum found out she had breast cancer in spring 2011 and after a mastectomy and a tough course of chemotherapy and radiotherapy mum was told that she was clear shortly before Christmas 2011. She had a 6-monthly check-up in June 2012 and was again told that all was well but then over the summer started to get some back pain. She only really complained about it in August, although I suspect she must have been in quite a lot of pain for a while and after several doctor’s appointments she finally had an oncologist appointment on 3rd October when she found out she had secondary breast cancer in her bones. By the Sunday of that week mum was admitted to Kingston Hospital where she stayed until Thursday, 8th November when she was transferred to Princess Alice Hospice in Esher and sadly passed away on Saturday evening, 10th November. My mum has fought a very brave battle against cancer. She was shocked to receive the diagnosis of secondary cancer but determined to undergo whatever treatment she could in order to prolong her life. Sadly the cancer was very aggressive and scans in hospital showed it spreading rapidly. Unfortunately she also suffered an unrelated bleed in hospital which made her very weak. She wanted to get well enough to get out of hospital and go home but sadly was not able to but it gave us great comfort that she was able to be transferred to the hospice for the last few days where many of her family were able to visit with her and say goodbye. She passed very peacefully on Saturday with family at her side.
